Proper Vacuuming Helps Prevent Further Risks for Children with Lead Poisoning
Boise, Idaho (ContentDesk) March 21, 2006 -- Children face many health challenges and risks. In Erie County, PA, this includes lead poisoning - a risk faced by numerous children in the community. The county, which has a population of 280,000, has many homes built before 1970 that were painted using lead-based products. The Erie County Department of Health (ECDH) provides a program to assist families with children six years of age or younger who have lead poisoning or who have been identified as at risk .
The Department recently received an added benefit to help low-income families in the countys childhood lead poisoning prevention program. On one of my home visits I saw a mother trying to clean her carpet using a broom, says Laurie Preston, community health specialist with the ECDH.
This obviously wasnt an appropriate solution but it was what she had available. We had to find a better way to help this family and others to address the need for providing a clean environment for their children. It is vital that lead-based paint dust be removed from homes as much as possible in order to prevent further exposure for the children. Sixty-six percent of the homes in Erie County have lead paint, which contributes to the higher-than-normal number of children in the community who have lead poisoning. A key to reducing exposure to lead-based paint dust is to clean properly, but many families lack the tools to do this, and thats where one of Americas leading vacuum manufacturers came into the picture.Preston began an Internet search of vacuum manufactures in the hope of finding a company who would donate vacuums that could be given to appropriate families participating in the program.
